Note to self: Next time I’m in New York, I must visit Bemelmans Bar. Sadly, up until a recent issue of the Wall Street Journal magazine, I wasn’t aware of this gem. Which is not surprising, perhaps, since I don’t frequent bars much and don’t stay at luxury hotels, either. Nevertheless, I clipped that article because I love the concept of Ludwig Bemelman, illustrator and
author of the popular Madeline children’s books, painting these jolly murals in exchange for living at the Carlyle for a year and a half. What a dynamic contrast: a children’s book author’s paintings in a bar – the grown-up gleaming stodginess of tufted leather seats versus the light-hearted whimsy of a carousel or mundaneness of a nanny pushing a pram!
If you’ve been there, let me know if it is indeed as cool as it seems to be in the photos!
