September is the month of lushness – all the fruits and vegetables are ripe and deep in color. So this month’s color is the most forceful of colors: red.
For the uninitiated, the idea here is to come up with ways to evoke red without mentioning the color itself because one of the challenges in writing effective descriptions is getting the color just right. Each month on this blog we work on one color, so far we’ve done green, pink, blue, and yellow. So help me here to come up with nouns and adjectives that bring red to mind. There should be a plethora but I can’t think of them all:
You about covered it, but how about 'flame' as one more?
hah- I agree with Nancy- you pretty much got the whole list– I loved the picture– that certainly SCREAMED red … great!
I'll go out on a limb and use a more abstract word – which may or may not conjure up 'red' for people– –
I always love these posts and this time I'm laughing out loud because of your photo.
Where's pepper or paprika?
I've taken a pass on your previous colors because it seemed too much like work. Oh, you say that's the point? So I put my brain to it for once. Don't know if all the words immediately evoke red for the average reader, but maybe some of these might be of some use to someone:
stoplight, American flag, Santa, plaid shirt, fire engine, cock's comb, China (as in flag, i.e., communist red), Renoir red (look at his paintings and you'll understand), brick (although brick comes in a hundred shades of red and brown here in St. Louis)
cherry tomato, pimento, V-8 juice, catsup, bbq sauce, beet
cherry wood, poppy, geranium, Japanese maple, cardinal, plumbago, Sedona, holly berry
Nancy – thanks. I was wondering about flame or fire because that can be many colors. Some writer, for instance, described eyes the color of the blue in a flame.
Anjuli – yes, the color of anger is most certainly red.
The Desert Rocks – Thanks for contributing! I didn't add pepper because it can be so many differnt colors.
Julie – glad you put your mind to it because you came up with some great versions of red, loved the poppy, and yes, Ketchup!
Mandi – I knew I'd missed a shade of wine, so thanks!
lipstick? heart? and Rothko red.
Hugs from Brazil. Mónica.
